Being a communist republic, China has been very harsh on its residents on what they should read and what not. News is always filtered for its residents and some news channels which are too liberal or give insider knowledge about the on goings in the country are blocked.
The regulators have laid down certain rules and news broadcasting whether on the TV, print or the latest fad of mobile news app have to be approved. The regulators believe that unauthorized news channels and apps are promoting pornography which harms the mental health of the youngsters. Also they have been blamed for rumor mongering and providing false information.
Ordering a crackdown, a regulation passed in September states that any news which is proved to be a rumor and visited or viewed by more than 5000 people will be prosecuted and responsible people can be sentenced to three years in jail. The government has threatened to shut down major mobile news apps like Zaker and Chouti which have million of subscribers.
The latest crackdown is in the wake of the government’s efforts to reign in the social media and stop rumors from spreading. The citizens however are terming the laws draconian as the only source of genuine news which is not filtered in the country is also being blocked by the government.
